European Commission launched the European Week of Sport

The European Commission launched the European Week of Sport, which will take place during the second week of September 2015. As mentioned by Commissioner Vassiliou in the opening speech, this is the time of the year when most people are likely to consider membership in clubs or fitness centres or to engage in some other form of physical activity; The Commission will provide funding for the European Week of Sport via Erasmus+, the new European programme for education, training, youth and sport.

The EWoS include a high-level conference on sport and physical activity, organised by the Commission in Brussels, a communications campaign and a series of sports events that will take place across Europe. A EWos label will also be created and any organisation can benefit from it if committing itself to organise one or more events in line with the focus themes defined by the Commission.

Coordination at national level will be ensured by a «national sport coordinator», whose role is to organise at least one event in each Member State and to promote corporate ideas. In the first edition (2015) will have a strong EU-level focus, but in the subsequent years national, regional and local initiatives will take a more prominent role.
