Christmas holidays and how to stay in shape

Christmas is the time of the year to spend time with family and friends and enjoy a well-deserved holiday. It can be very fun, although we can easily forget about our healthy eating habits and daily exercise routines. However, this can be avoided with some good programming and awareness of what we choose to eat and do. These are some ideas to follow in order to keep in shape during Christmas holidays.

#1: Go for a walk

It is a simple way to stay active and away from the smartphone while taking in some fresh air! Try to set this habit of taking a small walk after a holiday dinner instead of just melting into the couch.

#2: Drink more water

Hydrating is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining the function of every system in your body, including your heart, brain, and muscles. Drinking water can also prevent a possible hangover if you overdo it with alcohol!

#3: Time to take up a new hobby

Holiday season doesn’t mean that we just sit in the house, taking a break from our daily responsibilities and routines. It can also be the time to explore new possible hobbies or plan family activities. Try to go to a yoga lesson, a hiking trip in nature or a swimming session at a local fitness centre.

#4:  Select the treats

Surely, there is no need to restrict or deprive yourself during the Christmas period, but balance and maintenance is equally important. Be mindful in what you eat and how often you take in sugary treats.

#5: Be active

If you can not perform your fitness routine whenever possible, find ways to be more active daily. For example, park your car some distance away from the store and walk or use the stairs instead of the elevator. Small changes in everyday life, can make a big difference.

We believe that keep being active is the key to keep our bodies in shape and mind healthy. EuropeActive works to get more people, more active, more often, and aims to encourage  thousands of inactive Europeans to embrace an active and healthier lives through different initiatives like the #LetsBEACTIVE Project and the #LetsBEACTIVE Campaign.

Always bear in mind that you can still enjoy the holidays and stay fit at the same time. Merry Christmas and keep moving… in January your body will thank you for that!
