After thoroughly assessing all Commissioners-designate, the European Parliament voted to approve the new European Commission on November 27th, allowing president Ursula von der Leyen and her team to take office on December 1st. The 11 women and 15 men will have till 2024 to implement their agenda in cooperation with the Council of the European Commission and the European Parliament.
The new Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Ms Mariya Gabriel, will also be responsible for sport and promoting physical activity. During her confirmation hearing in the European Parliament, Commissioner Gabriel outlined her priorities for sport. In addition to protecting the integrity of sport and supporting grassroots sport, she will be focussing on promoting physical activity to keep European healthy and to use sport as a driver for economic growth.
