The EU Platform for Diet, Physical Activity and Health is facing a challenging time with several public health NGOs having decided to leave the European Commission-led activity. The platform was established in 2005 and EuropeActive is presenting the Physical Activity sector as an observer since 2006.
The Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety set up the platform to help EU governments via voluntary schemes to improve physical activity inequalities and healthy nutrition to tackle rising obesity rates and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across the bloc.
Several NGOs expressed their opinion about the Platform and the need for change. The platform is currently internally reviewed and the European Commission’s spokes person Anca Paduraru said the that Commissioner Andriukaitis will invite the representatives to meet him in Brussels in the coming weeks.
EuropeActive looking forward to an open exchange and discussion with the Commissioner about how to improve the current form of the platform, particularly how to give greater voice and visibility to Physical Activity as a tool to reduce the prevalence of cardio-vascular diseases in the long-term and how to promote healthy lifestyles.
