Last week from 9th to 12th December 2019, world leaders and experts came together in Muscat, Oman, to talk about progress on sustainable development goal (SDG) 3.4 on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health. The meeting focused on the need to increase efforts and accelerate progress in fighting NCDs in order to reach SDG 3.4.
NCDs remain one of the biggest health challenges at a global and a European level, where they are the cause of two thirds of deaths among people aged 30–69 years. Therefore, participants of the conference in Muscat made 8 recommendations to the WHO to help countries reduce the prevalence and impact of NCDs, including A wider and stronger engagement with civil society and the private sector.
As the leading association representing fitness and physical activity in Europe, EuropeActive fully recognizes the importance of NCD prevention through physical activity promotion, and therefore strongly support these new recommendations to the WHO. With the Let’s #BEACTIVE project and campaign, EuropeActive actively contributes to the fight against physical inactivity and NCD prevention. EuropeActive looks forward to collaborating with the WHO in the area of disease prevention and health promotion.
