Doctors fight to keep gyms open so they can exercise

The iconic Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago is among the city's fitness facilities which have been able to keep their doors open to members – despite lockdown-style restrictions – after convincing the city's mayor that gyms are safe. The sector undertook an orchestrated lobbying effort through the Illinois Fitness Association (IFA), uniting fitness operators in the city and its surrounding regions.

EuropeActive, the leading voice and non-profit association for the European fitness and physical activity sector, is pleased to announce that preliminary data collected by King Juan Carlos University and AWRC-Sheffield Hallam University reveals extremely low levels of Covid-19 risk in fitness clubs and leisure facilities. Fitness and leisure sector continues close monitoring of COVID-19 rates in UK gyms and leisure facilities

Hundreds more gyms and leisure centres across the UK have submitted data on COVID-19 rates in their facilities, as the sector rises to the challenge of monitoring and controlling the virus. More than 1,900 facilities have now provided information to ukactive on the number of cases reported by authorities on behalf of customers that have visited their sites during a 14-day period in which they subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.
