Mar 7, 2023 - United Kingdom

ukactive published the joint letter, in which more than 200 bodies and individuals from the worlds of health, sport, recreation, and leisure asked the UK Government to include leisure centres in their Energy Bill Discount Scheme.

Support to the sport, recreation, and physical activity sector during the ongoing energy crisis is being requested.


Mar 7, 2023 - Slovenia

The Ministry of Economy, Tourism and Sport announced 634,4 million euros would be allocated, in 2023, in support of new incentives (among which 16,8 million, namely 5,5% of the amount, to the sports sector).

Minister Matjaž Han highlighted the need to support the businesses’ growth, as well as their digital and green transition. This is lower than last year’s commitment (slightly over 700 million euros).

The Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme will be extended, until 31 May 2023, and subsequently reformed.

The threshold to claim relief if energy costs increased was lowered, from 50% to 30% (retrospectively applied from 1 September 2022), while the eligibility for rebates went from 40% to 50% of the increased amount (from 1 March onwards). According to recent revenue statistics on the scheme, just over 33 million euros of the 1.3 billion euros initially allocated to the programme were disbursed. Business groups have welcomed the Government’s decision to broaden the scope of its temporary business energy subsidy scheme.

A survey conducted by DSSV revealed a slight increase in memberships (+1%, on average).

The newly elected President, Prof. Dr Thomas Wessinghage, assessed that the industry has not fully recovered from the impact of the pandemic, but expressed optimism in light of the sector’s reorientation towards health. On 22 March, a comprehensive report on the country’s fitness sector will be released.

A petition (which gathered more than 51.000 supporters) asks for a VAT reduction on fitness and other sports services.

The initiative was launched after the Danish Tax Agency considered that VAT exemption on physical exercise courses was not in line with the EU legislation.

Preparatory courses for physical activity instructors specialised in NCDs will start on 16 March.

The initiative, led by the Czech Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the MediSpo Academy, is part of the organisation’s key objective to interconnect the fitness and healthcare sectors.

The Czech Chamber of Fitness released a national barometer for the sector.

Focusing on investments, business development, energy prices and expectations for the upcoming period, respondents reported an improvement in the second semester of 2022, compared to the first six months.

Feb 23, 2023 - United Kingdom

On 17 February, ukactive launched, in cooperation with Sport England and Sheffield Hallam University, a study to understand how the sport and physical activity sector is supporting people suffering from long-Covid.

According to Huw Edwards, “provide vital guidance to our fitness and leisure organisations so they can best support people suffering from long-Covid symptoms”.

Feb 23, 2023 - Switzerland

SwissActive launched a survey among national stakeholders from the fitness and physical activity sector, to gather information for the report ‘Key data of the Swiss fitness industry for 2023’.

The research project is being conducted in collaboration with the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG).
