The Beating Cancer Stakeholder Contact group held its first virtual meeting on 28th May 2021, during the European Week Against Cancer, in the presence of Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides. The group was created to support the Commission and Member States in the implementation of the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, and EuropeActive was invited to take part in it.
In her introductory speech, Commissioner Kyriakides underlined the importance of cooperation and commitment by the stakeholder community, as the success of the Plan relies on the collectiveness of our response. She also stressed the importance of healthy and active lifestyles as a key aspect of prevention.
Subsequently, Matthias Schuppe and Jan-Willem van de Loo, Team Leader Cancer Plan at DG SANTE, provided updates on the Plan and details on its governance structure. They explained that the aim of the group is to follow the implementation of the Plan to align EU actions and policies. Thematic groups will be created to further assess the ongoing work. Adrian Peres, Head of the EU4Health Task Force, also provided an update on the EU4Health Programme. With a total budget of €5.7 billion, of which 20% minimum will be allocated for health promotion and disease prevention actions, it will operate through annual work programmes. The first one should be adopted at the end of June.
John F. Ryan, Director of Public Health at DG SANTE concluded by explaining that other meetings will be organised. They will be reserved for network members only. The Commission also created a poll to determine the thematic interests of stakeholders and the future working groups.
