On Friday January 1st, the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union commenced, which will last six months as part of the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU. In conjunction with Germany and Slovenia, Portugal is part of the Trio Presidencies from the period of July 2020 to December 2021, all of which have of course been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the recovery which will follow. Therefore, dealing with the pandemic and its social and economic consequences is the central theme of the Portuguese Presidency.

The motto of the Portuguese Presidency is “Time to deliver: a fair, green and digital recovery” and comes with a list of priorities such as the acceleration of the digital transformation, including the creation of digital solutions in the field of health. It has also prioritised a social Europe through the promotion of cooperation between member states in the field of health.
