Slovenia started its six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1st. Its programme will focus on four chapters: the resilience and recovery of the EU; the Conference of the Future of Europe; a union of the European way of life, the rule of law and equal criteria for all; and a credible and secure European Union, capable of ensuring security and stability in its neighborhood. Among other topics, the Slovenian Presidency will thus focus on the green transition, more resilient health systems, and economic and social recovery.
The Presidency will of course be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and will aim to build a European Health Union, strengthening its strategic autonomy. Realizing the importance of mitigating the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic, they will work on the implementation of the national recovery plans. These will also keep into consideration the green and digital transition, the importance of which have been made obvious in the past year.
Regarding sport and physical activity, the Slovenian Presidency announced that it will focus on a European Model of Sport, with a Council Resolution to be prepared on European values in sport, as well as antidoping. However, their main focus will be on lifelong physical activity to further promote the importance of being active for your health. An event will be organized on 24th September on this topic, and a Council Resolution will also be prepared.
