It’s finally the summer (for those of us in the northern hemisphere!), and while that should mean more sun and time spent outside, there will also likely be some record-breaking hot days ahead of us!

For those who are determined to work out no matter the temperature, we’ve put together a few tips for safe workouts and exercise routines:

1. Workout indoors. While the sunny weather will make you want to spend more time outside, on extremely hot days, it is safer to stay indoors. Consider gyms and fitness centres for your workout, where you can shield from the glaring sun in a nice, cool, air-conditioned space.

2. Hydration is key. We cannot over-emphasize the importance of staying properly hydrated if you are going to work out on a hot day!  You should be drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, more if you’re exercising.

3. Loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing is the way! Make yourself as comfortable as you can by avoiding tight-fitting and dark clothing.

4. Limit the time you spend in the sun. If you’re determined to exercise outside, make sure to pick a shaded area so you will not be directly in the sun. The time of day could also have an impact, so avoid over-exerting yourself during the 10am-3pm window as this is the hottest period of the day. Oh, and make sure to apply plenty of sunscreen!

While being active is really important for your health and wellbeing, when the temperature rises, you need to make sure you are well prepared so you do not accidentally overdo it with your regular exercise routine. By following these 4 tips, you can ensure a safe and fun workout without negative consequences.
