A new standard for fitness clubs, EN 17229:2025, has been approved by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and is expected to come into effect later this year. The new standard merges and updates the two previous parts of EN 17229, incorporating best practices from across Europe and reflecting the growing role of digital technologies as well as lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. EN 17229:2025 significantly expands the scope of the standard, now including clubs that supervise and conduct exercise sessions outside their facilities, such as outdoor exercises.
While health and safety remain essential, the new standard also places greater emphasis on personal safety and user experience—areas typically not addressed in national codes or standards. It also introduces service delivery requirements to ensure consistent quality of care and commitment to club members and users. The standard was developed through the collaboration of more than 12 countries and numerous industry experts, many connected through the network of national EuropeActive associations.
It establishes clear requirements for club operations and defines qualification standards for fitness professionals, in close alignment with EuropeActive’s educational framework. This supports the ongoing progress of the European Register of Exercise Professionals (EREPS). EN 17229:2025 reflects best practices in the management and operation of fitness facilities and will be applicable to almost all clubs in Europe.
As the sector evolves, the standard will be reviewed and updated to remain relevant, serving as a practical guide for operators. It also supports the FITcert® certification program, which will be updated accordingly. To date, more than 2,200 clubs have obtained FITcert® certification, demonstrating compliance with current European standards.
